Vacation Hangover

And the downside to vacation? Getting back to work after it’s all done.

I’ve been back for four days, and I still haven’t posted the new story (which will be available March 31), I still haven’t gotten my laundry done (ten days of short sleeves and shorts make several medium-sized laundry loads), and I’ve only posted once in the blog.

Well, twice, if you count today.

Welcome, folks, to the vacation hangover.

How does one beat this?

For starters, build a routine. Schedule things. Disruptions happen all the time, and not all of them are as pleasant as two weeks in Cabo. Meet your deadlines.

Coffee. Lots of coffee. Make friends with the French Press.

Sleep. Sleep is the most important weapon in your repertoire for getting back on track. Sleep helps you get back into your routine, helps keep your mind sharp, especially on the days where you feel like you’re just going through the motions.

And when all else fails, take some recovery time. I mean, most people schedule vacation so they have a buffer time between the time they land and the time they return for work, so why should it be different for writers?

Anyway, I need to get back to work. Any tips you have for beating a vacation hangover, leave it in the comments section.

Cheers!
